Experimental Publication Design – Statues & Graffiti This project explores unconventional approaches to printed publication design, integrating narrative, scale, and materiality. The final outcome consists of a four-page A5 publication housed within a custom-designed pocket, accompanied by an A3 folded poster stapled at the center. The poster features a hand-drawn map on one side and a curated collection of images on the other. The design concept challenges traditional publication structures by introducing a pocket mechanism, allowing individual pages to be removed and interacted with. Each page is designed with a distinct visual identity, incorporating graffiti-inspired elements layered over classical statues. The interplay between historic sculptures and modern street art reflects themes of cultural perception, defacement, and reinterpretation. Inspired by the nuanced reception of statues in different cultural contexts, the project takes a bold approach by digitally applying graffiti to statues using Procreate. Each modification adds a layer of storytelling—such as aquatic motifs over a Neptune statue—emphasizing the evolving narratives of public monuments. The pocket itself is an extension of the design language, featuring a spray-painted title and layered imagery of Bristol’s Neptune statue, reinforcing the theme of artistic intervention. The project not only experiments with visual storytelling but also expands the possibilities of publication design by encouraging tactile engagement with printed media.
